My first theme that I will talk about is that you aren't born with power, that power is gained through choices. You aren't just born with power. Power has everything to do with the mind and how people think of you. If a man had a gun and the second didn't, would the first be in power? Only if the second didn't have a gun also. If you took away all these gadgets and weapons of the golds and silvers, than where is the power now?Darrow proves that with a little bippity boppity boo, that anyone can have power. He learns, in the passage, that he is stronger than a gold. He has killed a gold, and he can be and act just like them. What is the difference now? I want you to think about why Darrow, a Red, can bejust like a gold...it is because they are all the same. Power is something gained from courage, justice, and leadership. Darrow has those things, and he plans on using them to gain power.
My second theme is that no matter what happens, never forget who you are and where you came from. I think that Darrow almost forgets that he is a red sometimes. He starts truly becoming a Red and my heart skips a couple beats during this time. I think it's crazy to think that Darrow forgot what he is doing in the game and why he is there. Sometimes he becomes vicious, but luckily he comes back and tells himself he is there for Eo, which always makes me feel better. The best part is that he knows that he isn't doing this for vengeance. He is doing this for a change in the future, or for Eo's dream, and even for Eo herself. The point I think the author tried to get across was that no matter what people do to you, in front of you, or to others, don't ever lose sight of who you are an what you stand for. Once Darrow or anyone else ever falls into the darkness and turns cold, there is no turning back and you turn into that one thing you hated in the first place.
